GROWING (UP) IN FAITH, HOPE AND JOY

Smithfield, NE: For his baptism at Hope Evangelical Lutheran Church on Palm Sunday (April 5, 2009), Cole Kennedy chose Jacob Gregg and Garrett Dodson to be his sponsors.

What makes this unusual is that the baptismal candidate and sponsors, sometimes referred to as “Godchild” and “Godparents,” are all 5th graders.

“Baptism has been described as a one-time event that takes a lifetime to complete,” said Rev. Cathi Braasch, pastor of the 118-year old congregation situated in open country between Smithfield and Bertrand. “These guys weren’t only excited about the baptismal service. They are excited about their faith in Jesus Christ and being brothers in Christ day in, day out.”

Pastor Braasch added: “I’m not sure who was more excited -- The three boys or the grown-ups who are leading youngsters in their Christian formation ” in Sunday School and in WINGS, Hope’s midweek program of Bible stories and memorization, music, crafts and recreation for area youngsters in first through sixth grades.

Cole's parents are Joe and Tracy Kennedy. Garrett's parents are Shawn and Carolyn Dodson. Jacob's parents are Monte and Roxann Gregg. The boys attend Bertrand Community School.
